AACOG administers the 9-1-1 program for Atascosa, Bandera, Frio, Gillespie, Karnes, Kendall, and Wilson counties based on guidelines from the
Commission on State Emergency Communications.
The AACOG 9-1-1 program serves approximately 196,789 residents, with 81,650 landlines being reported in 2010. During 2010, there were more than 100,960 9-1-1 calls placed to public safety answering points (PSAPs), with 77% of the call volume originating from wireless devices. The annual budget for the 2011 program is $1,444,871.
Mission
The mission of the AACOG 9-1-1 program is to work with regional and county 9-1-1 coordinators, local and wireless telephone companies, and telecommunications service providers to ensure that every 9-1-1 call is routed to the correct PSAP and managed successfully.
Goal
AACOG's 9-1-1 goal is to provide a seamless regionalized 9-1-1 database and a PSAP equipped with the most up-to-date equipment in each of the seven counties. This process will ensure that all 9-1-1 calls, landline and wireless, are routed, answered, and located on geographic information system (GIS) maps for proper handling of the emergency at hand.
Projects
Current projects include:
- Distributing training and public education materials
- Implementing an integrated network system
- Implementing Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) and Wireless Phase II
- Locating calls automatically through GIS and mapping
- Managing rural addressing and 9-1-1 databases
- Monitoring PSAPs and databases
- Upgrading PSAP equipment
9-1-1 Emergency Call Centers
The 9-1-1 emergency call centers are equipped and administered by AACOG for seven counties in the region - Atascosa, Bandera, Frio, Gillespie, Karnes, Kendall, and Wilson counties.
State funds collected from telecommunications taxes, fees, and surcharges are distributed to AACOG, which then uses the funds to purchase equipment and supplies for the seven county public safety answering points (PSAP). The AACOG emergency 9-1-1 call center system serves 89,836 landlines, representing 191,773 residents.
