Walking School Bus & Bike Buddies

What is it?

The Walking School Bus and Bike Buddies programs match parents who live in the same neighborhood and would like to have their children walk or bike to and from school together. A Walking School Bus typically consists of 3-5 children and one parental chaperone, and Bike Buddies teams up 2-3 children with one parental chaperone.

Why should I do it?

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, children and adolescents should do 1 hour or more of physical activity every day.  Walking or biking to school not only helps children reach this standard, but encourages lifelong healthy habits. It also engages children in an active and eco-conscious lifestyle from a young age. And of course, like the SchoolPool program, walking and biking to school reduces the number of single occupancy vehicles that cause traffic congestion and pollution around schools.

How do I sign up?

If you’re interested in starting a Walking School Bus or Bike Buddies program at your child’s school, contact Lily Lowder to schedule a presentation with your PTA. All interested parents can sign up with Lily, who will help by matching parents who live nearby each other.
